Iron Range Barn Dances is an annual dance series put on by Call of the Loon Community Arts.

Call of the Loon Community Arts operates as a nonprofit under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, serving the public interest through cultural, educational, and community-building activities.

Call of the Loon Community Arts is organized to:

  • Build and strengthen community through the celebration and teaching of traditional dance, music, and calling, and other cultural and artistic pursuits in Northern Minnesota

  • Foster inclusive, intergenerational events that encourage social connection, cultural heritage, and active participation.

  • Create welcoming spaces where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather.

  • Support the development of local artists by mentoring and providing opportunities for new and emerging musicians, dance callers, and dancers.

  • Preserve and revitalize traditional arts as living, evolving forms of community expression

  • Provide education and outreach in rural areas to inspire participation and ensure these traditions continue to thrive.

Our Board

Megan Reynolds - Chair

Megan has been a performer, musician, and theater-maker for the last 25 years, and continues to perform as an actor, vocalist, and educator around the Iron Range. Megan has directed the Hibbing High School drama program for the last 7 years, directing 11 productions to date. In 2025, for the first time in 23 years, her One Act team went all the way to the State Festival in the MSHSL One Act Competition with their production of This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing, and earned a starred Rating, the highest achievement possible. She teaches summer theater camps and drama intensives for younger ages through Hibbing Community Education. She also coordinates the Mesaba Cooperative Park Arts Camp for youth aged 8-13. In addition to her arts education work, she is a driving force behind Iron Range Barn Dances, plays bass with Crescendo Community Orchestra and percussion with the Hibbing City Band, assists the Boys and Girls Club with an annual fundraiser, and acts as faculty advisor for HHS Thespian Society. She continues to learn and teach all the lessons of authenticity, presence, and tenacity in the creative process at every rehearsal.

Jefferson Reynolds - Treasurer

Jefferson began his musical journey at age eight when he took Appalachian clogging lessons, then began playing music at age nine. He became involved in non-profit work when volunteering for community public radio WNRN-FM at age 17. In the intervening years, he has served as staff or board member for three public radio stations, joined and danced regularly with multiple community-oriented dance organizations, and now also plays traditional music for dances. This is a labor of love, as his professional career is as a hospital-based advanced practice registered nurse.

Ruthie Dixon - Secretary

Ruthie is passionate about creating a space to welcome people of all backgrounds. She cherishes activities that connect people. encourage community, and develop a deep sense of belonging. Her passion for community engagement started in her youth as an officer in 4-H. She now partners with various organizations such as Call of the Loon Community Arts, Virginia Rotary, Revive Virginia, Soroptimist Society, churches, Laurentian Chamber of Commerce, and others, volunteering her time to bring these activities to fruition. Her chosen employment is as a financial advisor with Edward Jones, caring for the financial well-being of her community.

Eliot Dixon - Vice Chair

Eliot is a passionate supporter of history, music, and culture in rural Minnesota. He believes that the sharing of these experiences and identities can transform a group of individuals into a true community. In his adoptive hometown of Hibbing, Eliot works to foster and strengthen community in his role as Customer Communications Specialist at Hibbing Public Utilities and his involvement in the Hibbing Chamber of Commerce, City Band, and Historical Society.
